Getting to know You:

What are your areas/minors: My areas are Psychology and Humanities and my minor is elementary education.

How do you explai IDS to others: When someone is curious as to what IDS is, i explain it as a major that has a minor and two concentrations in areas that one is interested in. It allows you to be well rounded and divers.

What are the advantages/disadvantages of an IDS education: As far as advantages, i have stated them above. On a personal disadvantage... i will not be able to experience the internships in the schools as a education major would. However, im satisfied with the degree i pursued to do!

  1. I chose Interdisciplinary Studies as my major because it allows me foundations in Behavioral and Social Science, Education and Commerce (Hospitality Management). I will hopefully take this degree on its completion into the Education field. Only my family is privy to the information that I am at UCF, studying for an IDS degree. I told my sister that enrolling in this program allowed me the freedom of selecting any course in my disciplines. Interdisciplinary Studies allows an integration of courses like a “smoothie” and in the long run will make me a well-rounded individual. I am not sure of what disadvantages this degree will have for me but on the other hand, my greatest advantage will be earning a Bachelor’s Degree which will help equip me for the workplace.

  2. My areas are Education and Behavioral/Social Sciences and my minor is in Commerce. I was originally a Hospitality Management major but changed my mind which resulted in that instead being my minor.

I explain Interdisciplinary Studies similarly to the way you do; as having basically three areas of study that you combine into one major. I find that most people I talk to have no idea what it is but really like the concept of it all.

Advantages of being an IDS major would be that you can take a variety of classes and aren't confined to a specific major. It gives you a lot more options and allows you to be versatile with school which I really like. I think a disadvantage would be that I sometimes do feel all over the place with the classes that I'm taking and I'm not really sure how it all relates together.

  3. Hi guys!
Sorry for the late response, I posted this information under the wrong spot.
My areas are Psychology and Health with a minor in Social Science Education.

When someone asks me what IDS is, I normally prompt it with I have create your own major. I have three different areas of study that I combine to create my degree. I get many quizzical looks, but the more I talk about how much I enjoy my classes and the IDS program diversity, I end up with many supporters.

There are some advantages and disadvantages to our degree. I agree with you Monica, I am not able to get Internship I and Internship II experiences along with my education courses. However, I didn't decide teaching until way late in my college curriculum, and would have had to graduate at least two years later had there not been an IDS degree. I am still able to pursue all my dreams with this major, and I really enjoy the diversity of my classes. I have been thankful for my IDS major.

  4. Hi Chelsea,
We have some things in common. First of all, our IDS degree is a perfect match.Secondly, we were both Hospitality Management majors until we changed to IDS. I am very pleased with my choice. Are you planning on graduate school, or the job market after graduation? All the best.
